Anne Furminger
Anne born 1829 Brede, East Sussex and died 11th November 1884 aged 52 in New Zealand
William BOAG was born on 17th January 1828 in Ardoch, West Perthshire, Scotland and died 28th August 1904 aged 76 in New Zealand.
(Ardoch is a small hamlet to the east of Braco, seperated from Braco by the river Knaik. Braco sit on the current A822, which was an old Roman road)William arrived on the Cornwall into Port Cooper (Lyttelton) on the 10th December 1851, after a four month voyage.
"As with many other immigrants Williams arrived with little or no money. After formalities, he set off walking to Pigeon Bay where he found employment as a ploughman with the Hays. He was determined to succeed and had the capacity to work hard to that end.
While William was working for the Hays he met Ann Fermiger (Anne Furminger).
The Hay's were then living in Wellington
so presumably the two families met.
Ann went to work for them several years later in Pigeon Bay, as a maid to Mrs Hay.
Although she could not read or write, Ann was a good business woman; instead of wages she took cattle which Mr Hay grazed for her.
This she did for the nine years she was with the Hays.
When William went to "Ohinetahi" Ann went also as cook, continuing her policy of receiving cattle instead of wages.
She had a reputation as a fine, resourceful woman, as well as being a splendid cook."
"This was the first Anglican church built there just 6 months earlier, designed by B W Mountfort.
It was made of bricks built into a timber framework.
Totara had been used but unfortunately the hot dry nor'westers caused the wood to shrink and in a short time
the building had to be abandoned."
William and Ann leased some land, with an option to purchase after severn years, they also purchased a section of swapland, situated
between the two upper branches of the Waimairi steam.
William and Ann built their first home and created the foundation of what was to become Burnside Farm.
The land was eventually purchased prior the the lease expiring, for one thousand pounds.
The full story of Willam and Anne is in the book by Noeline Boag " Celebrating 150 years - Boag Forebears & Pioneers "
of which I have a copy.
